Match of the Round
The match of the round goes to Stan Wawrinka, who rolled back the years to beat Holger Rune 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-5 to reach the fourth round at the Masters 1000 for the first time since 2020.
Stan was the better player and should have finished it off in straights, wasting a break in the second set and a 5-2 lead in the tiebreak, but he recovered to record his 550th tour-level victory.
The last 45 minutes were difficult. I controlled the match and I was playing well. I put a lot of pressure; I should have won the fight by then. I started to get nervous and a little hesitant. He returned to the fight. He is a fantastic player, a young player. But it’s special to keep winning. It was important to stay there mentally because I was playing well. I tried to calm myself. I already beat him in Paris. All my career, I only knew one way. To keep fighting, working, pushing myself and staying positive. I’m super happy with the win. Wawrinka in his win over Rune
Medvedev hates the Slow Court
Daniil Medvedev is not a fan of slow courts, and he made that even more apparent when he started talking about court speed in his match against Ilya Ivashka.
“As slow as this court is I will pee. So you can take 25 minutes. The court is slow, so I am slow; I take my time,” he told Mohammed Lahyani.
Lahyani replied, “You must accept it; you are professional.”
But Medvedev disagreed: “I don’t accept it. They say in the fact sheet these are hard courts. This is not a hard court.”
Draper beat Murray on Debut
Jack Draper, making his Indian Wells debut, defeated Andy Murray 7-6(6), 6-2 to set up an exciting tie with Carlos Alcaraz.
Draper has a big game, and that style should contrast nicely with Alcaraz’s high-quality movement around the court.
If he can find a way through him in Indian Wells, he will probably want sunny conditions so that his forehand and serve can fly a little more.
