EXCLUSIVE: Creed has already broken ground for Amazon with the latest installment in MGM’s film franchise, Creed III, racking up a $100M+ global opening and setting a box office record for the tech giant. Now Creed could create an Amazon universe spanning both film and TV. There were meetings with the franchise star and filmmaker Michael B. Jordan about different Creed-related projects for the past year, sources said. Plans for the scope of the universe became more daring after Creed III’big debut. Representatives for Amazon and Jordan declined comment.
Details are unclear as some of the talks are still in the exploratory stages but we hear that an anime series is connected to Rocky A spinoff IP is in the works, and there are ideas for an accompanying live-action TV series. A potential project centering on Adonis Creed’s daughter, Amara, played by deaf actress Mila Davis-Kent in Creed IIImaking his film acting debut.
As previously announcedhad a Dragon spinoff film in the works at MGM, written by Robert Lawton. The spinoff centers on Rocky Balboa’s adversary, Russian boxer Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), and his son Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) who are introduced as Creed’s adversaries in Creed II. There has been some chatter that the Drago branch could end up in a series but, according to sources, the intention remains to keep it as a movie. As of now, a script has been commissioned, and it is not yet clear if it will be produced.
Of course, there is also the prospect of more Creed featuring installments, with various ideas also being tossed around for live-action and animated films.
Jordan told Deadline last week at Creed III premiere “construction of Creed universe is something I’m really excited about. Through three films, the Creed The franchise is approaching the half billion mark at the global box office.
Building a Creed universe could be a test case showing Amazon’s ambitions for MGM, which the company acquired for $8.5B. Since the deal closed a year ago, Amazon Studios has been actively discussing mining the MGM library of IP, beginning with 007’s Road to a Milliona competition reality series based on the iconic spy, which was greenlit immediately after the transaction was completed.
And then there’s motherhood Rocky franchise. Nothing has been seen yet but there has been on- and off-talk about exploring the iconic boxer’s story — including his origins — for years, starting long before Amazon acquired MGM. If and when something comes together, franchise creator and star Sylvester Stallone is expected to be involved.
