Mo’Nique has continued to be candid about her open marriage to Sidney Hicks, though she’s now explaining how she eventually “grew out of” the arrangement.

Mo’Nique Welcomes ‘A New Chapter’ With Her Family

His comments came during a recent sit-down with The Hollywood Reporterand the comedian began by talking about how he and his family are in the process of accepting “a new chapter.”

“A new chapter, but not because of Hollywood. It’s a new chapter because my babies are graduating from high school. This is a new chapter because my grandson will be in kindergarten next year, and my grandson in fifth grade.”

Mo’Nique added, “Those things, for me, are the priority.”

On the subject of the open marriage, the “Queen of Comedy” spoke about her and her past spousal arrangements, which were discussed in Open Relationship of Mo’Nique and Sidney podcast.

While talking to THRMo’Nique revealed that they both started putting the brakes on their extramarital trials, because “life started happening.”

Specifically, she said she realized she “didn’t want to sacrifice” what she and Sidney had “for a layman.” Mo’Nique also talked about how she “started to see strength [she] never seen before.” As a result, the Bessie artist “grow from that.”

“Life started happening. I began to see a strength I had never seen before. He loved me at my worst. I didn’t want to sacrifice that just for a lay. So I grew up there.”

In addition to speaking about the changing dynamic within their relationship, Mo’Nique also praised her husband for being “the best manager.”

“He’s the best manager I’ve ever had. And I had big boys.”

Mo’Nique first opened up about the arrangement in a 2006 interview with Essence.

Reflecting on the revelation, she mentioned how the open marriage was totally her idea, because “she still wants to have sex with who. [she] is visible.”

“It was not Sidney’s idea to have an open marriage. That’s mine.”

As the situation worked out for her and Sidney, Mo’Nique acknowledged the public’s inflammatory response to the matter, as she said, “People lost their minds.”

He added, “They thought we were having these orgies.”

However, she noted that—since they were both busy with their children—there wasn’t much time to make many slings.
